The Four Approaches To Social Responsibility
Nowadays we come across the instability limits practically in all spheres of life, besides the turmoil in government and politics, both individuals and organizations continue the society advance. As a result, we switch on the TV adverts, connect to the Internet and pick up the morning newspaper and everywhere, from any perspective the media addresses us with world losses, but also benefits of particular businesses.
We are often being lost in this whirlpool of organizations and communities that seem to strive for our well-being, but sometimes we see the opposite, and we ask ourselves, What's going on? Why are they so irresponsible? The matter is, either do we realize it or not, some organizations and communities still fight to make their business and our lives better by taking some actions. Are they tolerant and ethical enough to bring benefits to separate individuals first and only after that to themselves? Are they legally competitive, neutral or highly immoral? That is an important issue.
Let's face the phenomenon of this "taking actions for advancing society". We call it social responsibility. As any other concept, the social responsibility intends some approaches taken in order to define it in the best way. The following are the approaches taken by businesses to show their social responsibility:
- Obstructionist;
- Accommodative;
- Defensive;
- Proactive.
If take into consideration the way the companies act according to any of these approaches we can imagine the spectrum of the advantages and disadvantages they generate in a society. For instance, the obstructive companies are often viewed as immoral, those bringing positive results and profit to themselves and negative ones to people, state and even environment. Such establishments and foundations are characterized by being deceiving, untrustworthy, polluting, or abusing manpower. Thus, this approach can take the darkest or the minus position in our imaginary spectrum.
On the other hand, the opposite of the obstructionist approach is the proactive one. Hence, the customers of the company with the common approach of conducting business should be lucky. Why? Ethical relation to you, care for the environment, loyal social programs, good benefits and desire to stay on the highest ranks no matter what is the competition and situation on the market are their principles. Moreover, some of them may even share their profit with charity organizations. Thus, these companies could be named socially responsible.
Finally, we may place the companies using two other approaches to social responsibility, i.e. accommodative and defensive. As a matter of fact we can consider them to be more or less neutral. Still there are some peculiarities of each of those approaches. Regarding the defensive one it should be mentioned that the social responsibility is not a goal for the companies of this type. They play on the market with the aim to make profits for themselves, still they do this according to law.
I mean, their business is often legal, though the customers may not feature real benefits, and even having caused some harm to the environment or people, the company is sure to deal with this it because the law of the country demands it.
In addition, the fourth and the very last approach in the row we are viewing is the accommodative one. On the assumption of the term itself the accommodative companies, regarding the social responsibility as significant and conducting their business in open, legal and ethical way, may adjust their business to external factors like the unfair competition or criticism.
To sum up the four approaches to social responsibility are obstructionist, defensive, accommodative and proactive. Each of these approaches demonstrates the pluses and minuses in actions of separate people or business organizations in the context of social responsibility.
